Ergonomics is the applied science of equipment design and adaptation in the workplace to optimize productivity, reduce employee fatigue and decrease risk of employee injury. The NS-LIJ Health System is committed to workplace safety. Each hospital has an ergonomic committee which is overseen by the System Ergonomic Committee. Each facility specific committee analyzes workplace injuries and educates the staff on the prevention of these types of injuries. This education begins during orientation and continues throughout employment. Members of the committee provide return to work education when an employee has received a workplace injury. The committee also investigates new equipment that may be beneficial to the safety of all employees and creates policies and competencies for the facilities.
